The philosophical Notes From Underground  (1864), written by Fyodor 
Dostoyevsky (1821­1881), is seen as a prologue to his major works of 
fiction. The nameless narrator, who is the first modern example of an 
alienated antihero, turns a cold cheek to materialism and the norms of 
his society.
